Edgewise Press, Inc., is proud to announce the publication of MY LIFE IN THE NEW YORK TIMES in a Special Limited Edition.

American painter Ross Bleckner has long been an avid reader of The New York Times, with decades’ worth of clippings from the paper to prove it. In this artist’s book, Bleckner, who had wanted to be a reporter as a young man, has now orchestrated his archive into a beautifully printed “homage to print media” (as he described it on The Martha Stewart Show, where this volume was prominently previewed).  My Life in The New York Times constitutes a kind of collaged media commonplace book, compiling fragments of advice, wisdom and comment, sequenced into a loose narrative based on the cycle of life, from childhood and school to career and ultimately death, with attendant themes of ambition, success, disappointment and tenacity tackled en route. The artist manages to turn the obituary into a source of inspiration. Details such as scotch tape bleeding through the paper are lovingly reproduced here, projecting a charming mortality of materials amid the poignancy of the thoughts Bleckner gathers.

ROSS BLECKNER was born in New York in 1949. He received his B.A. from New York University in 1971, and his M.F.A. from Cal Arts in 1973. He has had one-person exhibitions in many of the major museums and galleries in the world, including a retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York in 1995. A major monograph on his work, The Paintings of Ross Bleckner, and a major study, The Flower Paintings of Ross Bleckner, both by Richard Milazzo, were published in 2007 (Editions Alain Noirhomme, Brussels), and in 2011 (Galleria Mazzoli Editons, Modena, Italy), respectively. A book of Bleckner’s own writings, Examined Life:  Writings 1972-2006, was also published by Edgewise Press (see EP 21).  He was represented by the Mary Boone Gallery in New York since 1979. He is now represented by the Petzel Gallery, New York.

My Life in The New York Times is a first edition paperback, January 2011, 96 pp., 90 color illustrations, 8.75 x 6.5 in., sewn, bound, and printed in Italy.
